The real-life struggles of Tyler Baltierra’s father have been known since they first appeared on Teen Mom. While Tyler and now-wife Catelynn Lowell were trying to navigate the world of becoming teen parents – and a difficult decision – Baltierra’s father, Butch, was grappling with other demons. Now, Tyler has updated the world on what’s going on with dad Butch – and it’s not the good news everyone hoped for.

Butch is Still Struggling

Tyler

People have been keeping up with Butch for years, and fans always hope that the next update will be a positive one. After all, we’ve seen Tyler take him to rehab with our own eyes – so has he broken free of the cycle yet? Sadly, the answer is no.

Recently, Baltierra sat down with Kailyn Lowry on her new podcast, “Barely Famous,” and told people what’s up with his dad. Pop Culture reports, “‘I talked to him like a month ago,’ Tyler said of his dad. ‘He is in Texas, with some crazy chick that he’s dating…when he’s using he’s in this different character mode that I can only deal with so much. …I think he is [using drugs], based on my knowledge of him and everything, yeah for sure.’ Tyler added that Butch’s new friend is an ‘endless enabler’ due to her financial situation, which has led to a ‘toxic’ situation.

‘He’s with this chick who has got lots of money, so he’s kind of got this endless enabler, really. They’re in a toxic-they ain’t in a good situation,’ Tyler said, noting that in his own relationship with his dad, ‘I’ve gotten to a point where I’ve just accepted him. He’s an addict. Relapse is part of it.’”

Legal Troubles for Butch

Tyler

Unfortunately, Butch’s relapse comes on the heels of some legal troubles that compound the problems he’s facing. Butch – real name Darl – was arrested in March 2020 for driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. Later they found that his blood contained THC, amphetamine and desmethyldiazepam. He was arrested again in June 2020 for hindering to which he pled guilty and later settled on. In a drawn-out legal battle due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, Butch finally got to lodge his plea for the March arrest in November 2021 – and he pled “not guilty.”

The Sun adds, “The prosecutor on the case filed a ‘noticed to seek sentence enhancement,’ according to court papers, because of his past home invasion conviction in 2001, and breaking and entering a building with intent to commit larceny convictions in 2002 and 2006.

Butch could get one to five years for operating under the influence of alcohol, one year for driving with license suspended and 90 days for open container, plus fines, community service and/or substance abuse screening.”

While Tyler and Cate seem to have it all together – Butch’s life continues to be a spiral they watch from the sidelines. Tyler may be resigned to doing what he can and letting go of what he can’t help, it still hurts – and every time he has to share an update that isn’t in the right direction, it’s a sad reminder of why Tyler works so hard to be a good father and husband.
