You know what’s not a hard pill to swallow? Finding out about a fourth installment in The Matrix saga. The official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections had all fans on deck, receiving 2.2 million views in just one hour after being released. One enthusiast tweeted “I was wary of a new Matrix film – but after watching this trailer I am all in.”
Former Matrix castmates, Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss and, Jada Pinkett Smith will reunite for the most recent film. They will also be joined by new members such as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci. This star studded cast is about to take us back into the world of The Matrix but this time around they will have no memory of their past as freedom fighters against the machines. However, Thomas Anderson’s very realistic dreams prove that residue of the past is lingering in his head as he unpacks them with his psychiatrist.
What Pill Will You Choose?
“After all these years, to be going back to where it all started. Back to the Matrix,” said Groff’s character at the end of the trailer. The action packed clip follow Anderson and his trip back into the digital landscape.
It opens with Anderson on edge while sitting with his psychiatrist. He shares his “dreams that weren’t just dreams”. They appeared more as visions of familiar green code, fatal fights and people attached to painful looking gizmos. The trailer continues with Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” playing in the background as Anderson moves through life in San Francisco and sits in a tub with a rubber ducky on his head, knowing that something is off. This immersive clip brings viewers back with gravity-defying martial arts, malicious shapeshifters, Neo and Trinity reuniting and explosive scenes all in a high-tech virtual-reality world that dabbles between fantasy and real. And yes, the return of the red pill and the blue pill is featured as well.
The Matrix Cast, Resurrected
It’s been a hot minute since Neo was dodging bullets and saving humanity, but Keanu Reeves has been pretty busy since his days as savior of mankind. Seeing him reprise this beloved role has fans across the internet rejoicing. But where’s Morpheus? Y’know, the original Morpheus.
It would appear that Lawrence Fishburne was not invited back to reprise his role as Neo’s mentor and guide, but, “you’d have to ask Lana Wachowski why,” according to the beloved 60-year-old. It’s possible they’re including lore from a Matrix video game wherein Morpheus died, but it’s unclear if that’s the reason behind the cast shakeup. Abdul-Mateen will be playing a younger version of Morpheus, if the trailer can be believed. Fishburne, who is married to Gina Torres, another sci-fi superstar, is going to leave some big shoes to fill.
Fans have also been eagerly chomping at the bit to find out if Agent Smith will return, played by Hugo Weaving. Unfortunately, the answer is no. It’s extra heartbreaking to find out that Smith was originally slated to return, but scheduling conflicts between Weaving and the new movie caused negotiations to crumble. You might even say – Smith was unplugged from the project.
But even without two of its major movie headliners, will the movie live up to the years of anticipation? All signs point to yes.
