The Weeknd is popular, but just how popular may shock you. Guinness World Records say he’s not just any world-famous, world-beloved artist – he is the most popular artist in the world.

The Weeknd, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, was awarded the honor late Monday.

CBS News reports, “No one else even comes close to the singer’s streaming success, according to Guinness World Records, which said the 33-year-old singer has set two world records for music streaming: He has the most monthly listeners on Spotify and he is the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Spotify itself also noted the milestone last month, tweeting, ‘It’s official: On February 27, The Weeknd became the first artist in Spotify History to reach 100 Million monthly listeners.'”

Part of his surge in popularity is due to the release of his remix of “Die For You,” originally released in 2016. The remix included Ariana Grande, and skyrocketed to the top of world charts in no time.

This isn’t Tesfaye’s first Guinness accolade, however. He earned two in 2016: One for Spotify’s most streamed album in 2015 and the other for the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a solo male artist.

And, TMZ reports, “The 2020 track “Blinding Lights” is also the biggest song EVER … achieving the most Spotify streams, and it’s also the longest charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 of all time with a total of 90 weeks on the chart.”

Tesfaye’s music includes soulful lyrics, a buttery smooth voice and compelling beats that carry listeners from quiet moments alone to dancing at a music festival.
