They Should ‘Change the Results of the Election’: Donald Trump Urges Overthrow of Duly Certified Election Results
There was a time when a President talking about overturning election results after they were certified would be so far
There was a time when a President talking about overturning election results after they were certified would be so far into the realm of insanity as to be comical. Now though, the discussion is commonplace – and grave.
Former President Donald Trump took to his platform Truth Social over the Labor Day holiday weekend, to once again push for the 2020 presidential election results to be changed. No longer hiding his intent behind flowery phrases such as, "justice" or "rigged election," Trump is now striking to the heart of what he desires: a retroactive change as to who won in 2020. Not only is it impossible, but it's a dangerous precedent eroding away at the foundations of the peaceful transfer of power in the United States.
‘[They Should] Change the Results of the 2020 Election’
Trump has been very active on Truth Social over the last week as legal woes bear down on him from multiple directions, but on Labor Day he dropped an ominous "Truth" bomb that has experts worried. Trump wrote, "Now that the FBI and DOJ have been caught in a massive and determinative Election Rigging Scam, are they going to change the results of the 2020 Presidential Election? They should!!!"
Although he has suggested changing the election results before, he is now repeating the prompt which shows that it wasn't just an emotional moment or a fond wish – it was an imperative.
Trump pushing to overturn the election results from two years ago, which have been duly certified by Congress and accepted by the voting population, is not only dangerous precedent, but also impossible. There is no legal precedent to do what Trump is calling for, which is likely what his legal team has explained to him.
So why does the former POTUS continue to push for exactly that? The answer may be in the replies to his Truth Social post. Trump's supporters jump at any opportunity to rally around the "rigged election" theme, and as he eyes the campaign trail to 2024, Trump is looking to gather his most ardent and passionate supporters to his cause.
A small portion of that passion was on display over the weekend as Trump took to a stage in Pennsylvania, where he called President Joe Biden an "enemy of the state" among other things.
Is Joe Biden an Enemy of the State?
On the stage in Pennsylvania, Trump blasted Biden and Democrats, telling the rapt crowd, "Biden thinks making America great again is bad for our country. Do you believe it? That was in his—Biden says 'We got to stop MAGA.' That's when I defined it, because I don't think he knows what it meant. It means 'make America great again.' We have to stop it. Stop MAGA. Stop making America great again.
He thinks making America great again is a threat to our country. No, making America great again is great for our country."
The former POTUS added, "This November, we're going to stand up to this rising tyranny of sickness, lawlessness and death. And we are going to take back our country. We're going to take it."
It was a momentous and dark preview into what the 2024 election will look like: a rehash of the bloody-knuckle politics ahead of the 2020 election.
Rumors swirl Washington that high-level Republicans tire of the need to explain away and defend Trump's idiosyncrasies and legal faux pas, but whether that's enough to elbow him out of the lead for 2024's Presidential nominee remains to be seen.
