Tom Holland is one of America’s favorite actors.
Whether he’s making adoring eyes at girlfriend Zendaya, or swinging into people’s hearts in his role as Marvel and Sony’s Spiderman, there’s just something about his boyish charm and earnest expression that makes him instantly likeable.
But Holland is leaving Hollywood, and he kinda just dropped the bomb casually during an interview with Extra.
But don’t worry – it’s just a temporary leave of absence.
Holland told Extra that he’s taking a year off from acting after the fraught filming of his Apple TV+ series, “The Crowded Room.”
Holland explained to Extra’s Terri Seymor, “It was a tough time, for sure. We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”
“I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was,” he added.
Holland said that the whole experience was difficult, but he “really enjoyed” working on The Crowded Room.
And, the “Spiderman” actor added, he “loved the learning curve of becoming a producer.”
The 27-year-old actor doesn’t shy away from hard work. After all, he played the physically demanding, boyishly charming and loveable Peter Parker in the demanding Marvel films. But nonetheless, he still found the whole filming of “The Crowded Room” challenging.
He explained, “I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always lived by this idea that hard work is good work. And I really enjoyed it. But then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where sort of was like, ‘I need to have a break.’ ”
However, after everything is said and done, Holland said, “I am excited to see how it turns out, and I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain.”
“The Crowded Room,” which will air on Apple TV+, is about Danny Sullivan – played by Holland – an unsuspecting man who finds himself arrested after a shooting in New York City in 1979.
Detective Rya Goodwin – played by Amanda Seyfried – puts Sullivan through a series of interrogations, and Sullivan’s unusual past is revealed.
A synopsis for the film reads, “In Manhattan in the summer of 1979, a young man is arrested for a shocking crime, and an unlikely investigator must solve the mystery behind it before the true criminal strikes again.”
Along with holland and Seyfried, “The Crowded Room” stars Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, Will Chase and Lior Raz. Jason Isaacs, Christopher Abbott, Zachary Golinger and Seyfried’s real-life husband Thomas Sadoski, are also guest stars.
The first three episodes of Apple’s “The Crowded Room” will air on Friday on Apple TV+, and they will release a new episode every Friday until the finale on July 28.
And Holland can watch the episodes roll out during his well-deserved year off from Hollywood.
No word yet on whether or not Zendaya will take the year off with him. But she’s the kind of person who never seems to stop, so we wouldn’t bet on it. The couple was seen on a rare public date on May 4, attending Game 2 of the NBA Playoff match-up between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers.
So yes, they’re still going strong.
