Former President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Special Counsel Jack Smith, calling for his defunding and dismissal in a recent Truth Social post. Trump has been targeting Smith since his appointment by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee investigations into Trump’s handling of classified documents and his involvement in the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack.

Trump, who faces federal and state felony charges, including a recent indictment on 37 counts related to the documents case, accused Smith of being a “sick puppet” of Garland and President Joe Biden. He claimed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI have weaponized law enforcement and engaged in election interference.

In previous posts, Trump referred to Smith as a “major SleazeBag” and accused him of participating in election interference. He also criticized Smith after a leaked audio recording, mentioned in the federal indictment, appeared to feature Trump discussing a highly confidential document. Trump claimed that Smith was responsible for leaking the recording, although no evidence was provided.

Speculation has arisen that Smith’s January 6 investigation could lead to further criminal charges against the former president. Additionally, Trump may face charges in the ongoing investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in Georgia regarding his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

The Department of Justice declined to comment on Trump’s remarks.
