It’s almost time for UEFA EURO 2020, after months of qualifying showdowns. The tournament is kicking off in Rome this summer. And now the music that will provide the backdrop to one of football’s biggest events has been revealed. The song, “We Are The People,” is a collab between DJ and producer Martin Garrix, Bono and The Edge. With less than a month to go until the start of UEFA EURO 2020, it’s the perfect time to give the song a listen and get ready for a summer of football tournaments.

With less than 30 days until UEFA EURO 2020 starts, the official sound of the summer has been dropped. “We Are The People,” was written to celebrate the tournament but focuses on the challenges facing the world while trying to provide a unifying energy. A press release for the song shares, “It is a hymn sheet from which everyone can sing, no matter where one is based, but it will have special relevance in Europe where the eyes of the world will be on the UEFA EURO.

‘We Are The People’ hopes to reflect the positivity, hope and determination required for any team to succeed, as well as offering a sense of togetherness, which fits the theme of EURO 2020—Unity. For the first time, the UEFA EURO will be played across the continent, which will display the overriding theme of unity throughout. With less than a month to go until the tournament gets underway, the music campaign was launched on the giant screens at Wembley Stadium on Thursday evening, with the stadium’s arch illuminated in the colours of UEFA EURO 2020.”

Garrix is the mastermind behind the song, and also wrote the walkout and broadcast music for the tournament.

All the way back in October 2019, it was revealed that Garrix would be crafting the music for UEFA EURO 2020. After a long wait, and years of hard work, Garrix is thrilled to be able to share his efforts with the world.

Garrix’s plans to craft “We Are The People,” unfurled when Bono and his bandmate The Edge agreed to collab on the song. Bono wrote the lyrics and melody, and The Edge added his signature guitar riffs to create a song that brought the best of the three artists together. The press release adds, “Creating the music for one of the biggest sports events in the world together with Bono and The Edge has been an incredible experience,” said Garrix. “I’m very proud of what we did together and excited to finally share it with the world!”

“The long wait is almost over and we are delighted to officially unveil the official song for UEFA EURO 2020 ‘We Are The People’, which features some of the world’s most celebrated artists in Martin Garrix, Bono and The Edge,” said UEFA marketing director Guy-Laurent Epstein. “Football and music have the power of bringing people together. They are vectors of passion and emotion and combining them will extend further the fan celebration of the tournament, as well as reaching out to new audiences. With the star-studded line-up we have pulled together to create the tournament’s official music, we are confident of doing just this.”

The song features Bono’s signature buttery croon, and an energizing sound that inspires and uplifts. The music video shows people from all walks of life bonding over their love for football. It concludes with the three artists looking over a river in sunset, hugging; a clear symbol of a return to unity and comradery after a dark year of isolation and hopelessness.

UEFA EURO 2020

After everything the world has endured, the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament is an exciting celebration of people’s and their similarities. The UEFA tournaments will be held across the continent rather than in one place, including in 11 host cities in all. Amsterdam, Baku, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome, Saint Petersburg and Seville will all host matches this summer. The first match kicks off in Rome on June 11, 2021 with Turkey versus Italy. The final tournament to decide the champion will take place at Wembley Stadium, London on July 11, 2021.

“We are the people,” is the UEFA EURO’s first volley in the war against disunity, isolation, and disagreement. It implores people to embrace differences but seek similarities. It reminds us that we’re all a part of the same, ever-changing world. While some constants remain, like the world’s love affair with football and Bono’s love for sun glasses, other things change, but we weather them together as a species.

In order to shape the mood leading into the tournaments, UEFA is including player contributions in the official UEFA EURO 2020 playlist which will be curated by Garrix and made available on all major music streaming platforms.

UEFA has also crafted  the #EUROHyped social media challenge which hopes to get people pumped and united with excitement over the upcoming tournament. The music video for the song can be viewed on YouTube. With less than a month away, how #EUROHyped are you?
