What To Screen & Stream This Last Weekend of August 2022

There is no way around it. August has flown by.

If the endless Labor Day sales emails in your inbox aren’t enough of a reminder of this, perhaps the arrival of the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks will do it.

Yep, soon leaves will be changing and we will begin packing on the layers of clothes.

In the corner of the world that is Hollywood, this weekend is merely a shadow of what is to come for next weekend’s big holiday push. Even if there are slim pickin’s at theaters this weekend, there are still dramatic and delightful options for your viewing pleasure.

Let’s start with a light ’harted’ pic.

Hollywood Heavyweights Get “Me Time”

Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Hart join comedic forces for Me Time. The comedy has father, Sonny Fisher (Hart) taking some time off from dad duty for the first time in a long time. He decides to hit up his old pal Huck Dembo (Wahlberg) and soon gets a crash course in how the other single side lives.

Before you come at us for suggesting Wahlberg is a comedic actor, kindly remember he held his own against Will Ferrell in the Daddy’s Home franchise and he carried another one solo in Ted.

Me Time also stars Regina King as Maya Fisher (Hart’s onscreen wife). Keep an eye on her for another project coming out next weekend called Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. More on that in our fall preview.

Ripped From The Headlines

John Boyega is probably best known for his role in the Star Wars franchise as Finn. However, in Breaking, Boyega puts down the stormtrooper garb and instead picks up another type of military outfit – a Marine uniform.

Boyega is Brian Brown-Easley, a veteran who makes headlines after he holds a bank hostage when his disability checks fail to arrive. Breaking also stars the late Michael K. Williams in one of his last on screen roles before his death in September of 2021. He plays a fellow Marine turned hostage negotiator. Connie Britton also stars as a television news producer in this dramatic film.

The film is heartbreaking and heavy. Few movies will make the viewer side with such extremes as robbing a bank, but this is certainly one of them.

Your Wish is My Command

If you had three wishes, what would they be? That is the question that is posed to Alithea (Tilda Swinton) by The Djinn (Idris Elba) in Three Thousand Years Years of Longing.

The movie, directed by George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), has scholar Alithea coming across a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

Can’t say that I blame whoever put the Djinn in the bottle in the first place. Let’s be honest, if we could bottle up Idris Elba and carry him around forever, we totally would. Well, we wouldn’t think twice about having that fine specimen of a man under our arm.

You Are Cordially Invited

The log line for the movie The Invitation reads like a wedding summons from your most bougie of friends: "You’re invited to a nightmare generations in the making."

This might be an invite you'll want to ignore. That is unless you are a fan of thrillers.

The Invitation has the young and beautiful Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), an only child looking for more relatives now that her mother has passed. When a DNA match in the form of an handsome English man named Walter (Thomas Doherty) comes into her life, Evie is thrilled.

The cousin escorts Evie across the pond just in time to witness a family wedding. Of course the nuptials are far from heavenly.

*Writers Note: A rating of zero stars indicates that the movie was not screened in time for deadline.
