In a new memoir, Jada is spilling the beans about the things that were going on behind the scenes when her husband went after Rock on stage. As it turns out, the married couple is married. But only technically. They’ve been separated for years. Here’s what we know about the actress’s revelations.

The 2022 Oscars will forever be remembered due to the “Slap heard ’round the world.” Host Chris Rock was on stage roasting Hollywood’s elite. And his attention turned to Jada Pinkett, who married actor Will Smith in 1997. The comedian and actor made a G.I. Jane joke at Jada who recently shaved her head after learning that she has alopecia.
After Will took note of his wife’s reaction to the joke, he took unexpected measures. The Fresh Prince Hollywood superstar stormed onto stage. He approached Rock in a fit of rage and slapped him across the face. 55-year-old Will roared at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out your f–king mouth.” He then strode off stage and rejoined his wife, who looked stunned.
At the time, Jada says now that she thought it was a skit. But once she saw Will’s face upon returning to his seat, she realized that it was real. Jada is currently releasing a new memoir and is on a whirlwind press tour. The 52-year-old has revealed some shocking details about her relationship with Will at the time of the slap.

Jada Pinkett revealed more than her shock over Will Smith’s assault on Chris Rock. She also revealed that her relationship status with Will at the time of the 2022 Oscars was not what people assumed. Headlines referred to them as husband and wife at the time. And that was technically correct.
But the Gotham actress now says that she and Will were separated at the time of the slap. Not only that but they had been separated for more than six years by then. While the duo is still married on paper, they are living different lives. Rumors of the couple’s split have been dogging them for years. Especially when headlines broke that Jada had been having an affair with family friend August Alsina. Nonetheless, they played the dutiful married couple in public.

Jada hasn’t revealed why they split. But she did say recently that she can’t bring herself to divorce her husband. And she’s committed to “working through anything.”
Hollywood has long side-eyed Jada Pinkett and Will Smith‘s relationship. Rumors have flown that the two have an open relationship, are swingers, or any number of other non-conventional marital practices. But Jada’s piecemeal revelations raise more questions than answers. Answers that will hopefully be revealed in her upcoming memoir, Worthy. The book hits the shelves on October 17.
