Will Smith Loses Work After Infamous Oscar Slap

Award shows are always filled with classic jokes, entertainment and great fashion. And, sometimes they come with some unscripted drama. We all know and remember the time that Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's speech for winning 'Best Video of the Year' over Beyonce. Or, how about the 'Best Picture' mix-up at the Oscars. La La Land was announced as the winner and as the cast and producers shared their acceptance speeches their "win" was quickly revoked. Basically, a mistake was made, someone gave the wrong envelope, and the real winner of the award was Moonlight.

Well, now we've got another moment that gets to live rent free in our head among the many others. If you live under a rock and haven't heard already, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars over what was supposed to be a joke. The comedian and actor made a J.I. Jane joke at Jada Smith who recently shaved her head after learning that she has alopecia. At was first a laugh became a serious moment when Will noticed her reaction and made the emotional decision to walk on stage and slap Rock.

The controversial moment has stirred up a lot of chatter. Since the event Smith has resigned from the Academy. Films that he was set to appear in have also been put on hold.

Will Smith Resigns From The Academy

Following the slap on stage at the Oscars Will Smith has officially resigned from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. People was provided with a statement which read:

"I have directly responded to the Academy's disciplinary notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for conduct. MY actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy."

The statement continued, "I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate."

Yes, Will Did Apologize To Chris Rock

Many photos went viral of Smith continuing on with his night post event and left fans curious about what happened between the two off-camera. And although that may stay a mystery, Smith did publicly apologize to Rock on Instagram.

He wrote, "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

Netflix Puts Will On The Back Burner

Netflix had big plans for their film Fast and Loose. Initially, Smith was their guy on screen and David Leitch was set to be the director. They had apparently been competing with Universal to be the next project for Leitch which they lost. Just a week before the infamous Oscar slap, Leitch withdrew from the project. This forced Netflix to place an "urgent call" for someone else to take over.

However, the call no longer seems to be so urgent.

Since Smith's altercation, Netflix has pushed their film to the back burner.

Fast and Loose was written to tell the story of a crime boss who loses his memory after an attack. By piecing together clues he discovers that has led a double identity as a wealthy kingpin and broke CIA agent. We are still waiting to find out if Netflix will eventually move forward with a new star and new director.

The other two projects which Smith was involved in, Emancipation on Apple + and Bad Boys 4 at Sony also have been placed on pause with no word on what's coming next.
